Re: Cave Hill

Postby Gearbox on Sat Mar 07, 2009 11:46 pm

One Saturday morning when I was teenager, me and a cousin of mine decided that we gine pick coconuts from a tree in the yard of an abandoned house in our neighbourhood. To get into the yard we had to walk thru a very narrow path between the abandoned house and the house next to it (wunna know how close together the houses in town does be). Anyway, the plan was that he would climb the tree, pick de cokenuts, and drop them for me to catch and bag.

So up the tree he went, and as he got about half way up, a dog in one of the adjacent yards started barking like crazy and throwing itself against the galvanize paylin. Now I knew that the people who lived at the house with the dog were half mad people...and I tell myself dat de blasted dog gotta be half mad too. Anyway, I didn't worry too much bout de dog because he was behind de paylin, but as de cokenuts begin to drop de dog started getting more and more frantic. After catching the 3rd or 4th cokenut, I looked to my left and realized that de dog's front legs and head were already over the top of the paylin, and I couldn't believe dat bastard would have tried to climb over a 6-foot paylin.

Well Gearbox knew it was time to exit dat yard with great speed. Wunna evah played a pinball machine?? Well my cousin tell me dat when I did running thru de narrow space between de two houses, I did bouncing from side tuh side like a pin ball in de machine. But dah din funny tuh me, cause I cuddah hear dah big ougly black dog chasing me down. When I got thru de little entrance gate I was on the main road, and I needed to make a sharp left turn in case a car was passing, but that was impossible to do at the speed I running. When I got into the road a car was coming, but fortunately it was a safe enough distance away to avoid hitting me. My problems were not over yet, the f#%king dog was still on my ass, and I could hear his paws scratching on the road as he made the wide left turn behind me. He got close enough to bite at the back of my knee and graze a little skin off. He only gave up his pursuit as I made another left turn thru the gate to where I lived. I went and sat down and it took nearly half an hour for my heart rate to return to normal.

A few minutes later my cousin walked thru de gate wid de bag of cokenuts in one hand, and big rock in de next...and when he see me de man start laffin hysterically. De man tell me dat he was laffin so bad when he see me bouncing bout between de houses dat he nearly fall out de tree...I cuss he and tell he dat dah blasted dog cuddah kill me down in dhay.

Here's a stupid ting I did one day when I was about 9 years old. I was a cub scout at James Street Methodist Church, so on certain days after school I had to go cubs in the church yard. This one particular day I left home in my uniform looking nice and neat as usual, but rather than walking stratight on the main road, I decided dat I was going to take a little short cut thru a track behind an old house.

As I walked around the old house, I notice that all the window panes on the old house were broken, except fuh one single pane of glass. So wicked me decided that to keep uniform and consistent, I was going to break that pane of glass...so I kicked it in and it broke. I smiled to myself and continued on my way. When I got a few yards away from de old house I started to feel like a wetness in my right shoe, and when I looked down I was quite surprise to see that my left sock was still gray, but I right sock was now red...with blood. I took my hand moved the sock to see where the blood was coming from, and there was a big piece of scraped away flesh just above the angle on the inside...bleeding profusely without any pain at all.

I turned and headed straight back home, told my grandmudda dat I got cut, took off shoes and socks, and went under the yard pipe with it. I grandmudda asked me how I got cut, and when I tell she how it happen she said to me..."It serve yuh rite nigga man...de peepul winduh infere wid you?" Then she carry me inside and put dah red ting dat she use tuh call "macure comb" pun it...geeeee-zon-bread...dah is when I start tuh feel a burnin outta dis world. I never kicked glass since.

Another time I went at some friends in the next gap to play "Snakes and ladders". We had a little gambling ting gine on wid snakes and ladders...10 cents per person, winner takes all. Well I get brek and decided to run home to beg me grandmudda fuh 2 or 3 more 10 cent pieces so I cud get back in de game. I was bare foot, and as I was running I stepped on a rather big piece of broken bottle which stuck into the bottom of my foot. I had to hold it and pull it out...the cut was about an inch in length. When I got home I had to explain to my grandmudda again how it happened...she cleaned it out...put an ointment she called "poltist" on it, slapped on a piece of saltfish skin over the poltist, and then bandaged it. I still got my 10 cent pieces and hopped back over to my friends' house. When I told them what happened they laffed and mek mock sport saying dat I ketch a flat gine fuh money tuh gamble.

Ok. I left Bim almost 30 years ago as well (1980), but I only spent 10 years in the US and then returned home.

So have you been back here in recent years?

It's been almost 6 years since I was last in Bim, but I'm thinking of coming down this year but haven't made any plans yet. I'm way overdue for a trip there.
